Review :
Bursting with life, color, and beauty!
I didn't watch this expecting much. I'm not a child, and I'm not Mexican, and the trailers didn't sell me all the way. But I gave it a try, and by the time The Book of Life had ended, I was astounded. The Book of Life explodes with...life! There's not a single dull frame in the movie. It's a carnival of color, beauty, music, and life! Every character is unique, every landscape unforgettably intricate. Its fresh and dazzling, and bursting with heart. The Book of Life is one of the best kid's movies of the year.

The film tells the story of Manolo, a soulful and poetic young man hopelessly in love with the beautiful Maria. The only problem is that the dashing, preening Joaquin is in love with her too. To add to this, the gods La Muerte (made of sugar candy) and Xibalba (made of tar) are wagering on who gets the girl (and Maria will have none of it!). From there begins a story that will take our heroes to the Land of the Remembered, the Land of the Forgotten, and everything in...

An amazing movie, my children loved it so much we ended up watching it a second time at the movie theater. For some odd reason I don't believe this was marketed right, the movie has such a beautiful cast and beautiful story. The colors and the characters were so perfectly done. When Manolo arrives into the land of the dead with all other sugar skulls, gosh it feels so inviting and soooo beyond beautiful that it submerges you into the world of color, life and the festivities. By far one of the best mbira I've seen this year. The humor, the love and the acceptance that giveness is needed in order to be able to love.

Breath-takingly Gorgeous with a Dash of Mexican Flavor
We can all appreciate the brilliant and gorgeous animated films of Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks, but let's be honest that they all kind of look and feel the same. They're either selling toys or retelling old fairy tales, and while that doesn't diminish how good they are the animated field has been in desperate need of a kick in the pants for a long time. Actually, what it needed was a dash of spice, or in the case of the visually breath-taking The Book of Life, a dash of Mexican flavor.

Directed with obvious passion by Jorge Gutierrez, The Book of Life is a smorgasbord for the eyes, bursting with colors and energy like an overstuffed piñata. It's good to see a film that doesn't try to diminish its Latin heritage, but embraces it in a universal story of love and friendship based on the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, the "Day of the Dead". The story begins simply enough, both narratively and visually, with a museum tour guide (Christina Applegate)...
