An excellent movie by any standards

An excellent movie by any standards, not just that of Studio Ghibli. I really enjoyed it, enough to see it twice in theaters, both in Japanese with subtitles. Beautiful colors and imagery, a wonderful score (including Priscilla Ahn's "Fine on the Outside", and of course the strong female protagonists that are a Hallmark of the beloved Studio. I'm really looking forward to adding the movie to my personal collection of Ghibli movies for my home library.

Studio Ghibli has done it again: created a gorgeous world filled with credible characters, the kind you really care about. Ana, for example, the painfully shy twelve year old girl. Well, who, boy or girl, wasn't painfully shy at that age, at least some times? And there's the visual art. Ghibli has always met the highest standards in animation, and does that again. In 'Marnie,' pay special attention to the backgrounds - to the moss between the bricks, to the flowing grass, to the lichened stones. It's gorgeous.

I won't say much about the plot because unintended spoilers would be so easy. I will say that this carries an unusual mood: eerie, but not threatening or ominous, and blends the supernatural with the here-and-now seamlessly. What A Wonderful Tale
"When Marnie Was There" is rumored to be the last film work by the famed japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli after animator Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement. This studio is world renowned for their beautiful hand drawn animations and attention to detail not to mention killer plot lines that act as both heartwarming and ideological. I had been previously blown away by "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" and though that it might have been Studio Ghibli's greatest work, but then came this movie. What's it about?

When two teenage children vanish into the outback, their parents’ already troubled marriage unravels further.

What did I think?

This home-grown drama doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. Psychological drama? Whodunit? Neither? Parents Nicole Kidman and Joseph Finnes go for gritty, but look disconcertingly groomed and shiny for residents of an outback town (new arrivals, it’s true – but new arrivals from ANOTHER outback town). Nicole’s performance is surprisingly good for a while but ends up veering into familiar melodrama, while local cop Hugo Weaving is as solid as ever. The beautifully shot film is obviously trying for a sense of mysterious uncertainty, but it’s one thing to leave questions unanswered and another to leave them frustratingly ignored.

Slow moving & hard to watch, but not a bad movie with one of the best performances by Kidman I have ever seen. I say B-
“Are we bad parents? Did I do something wrong?” Catherine (Kidman) and Matthew (Fiennes) are a normal, boring couple living in Australia. When Catherine wakes up one morning to find her two children are missing her world is rocked. They feel the police are not doing enough and take it upon themselves to look for them. When past history is revealed no one can be trusted. This is a very difficult movie to watch. The acting by Kidman is Oscar worthy and everyone else does hold their own against her. On the other hand the subject is gut wrenching and the movie is a little slow moving. It does keep you watching and interested though, both to see the end and for Kidman’s performance. This is a good movie but nothing you can watch over and over and also one you really have to be in the mood for. Worth seeing for her acting if for no other reason. Overall, slow moving and hard to watch, but not a bad movie with one of the best performances by Kidman I have ever seen. I give...

The first episode of this mini series opens up on two young boys walking alone in a wood, one trying to name a frog and the other simply walking. In a manner very similar to a dream, the older brother Wirt realizes that he has no idea where they are, while Greg seems unconcerned as he continues trying to name his frog.

Every single mystery in this story is weaved beautifully into the narrative in a way that feels as though it could save the modern cartoon. In a world where fairytales are constant remakes of the same story and the characters are the same (not going to name any names or ice princesses), OTGW is a refreshing and wonderful change. Music and animation are uniquely crafted along with mysterious and beautiful characters that create an amazing narrative that while at times a bit dark, show the importance of responsibility and moving forward over dwelling in the past.

Over the Garden Wall is one of the most compelling things I've seen in recent years. It starts out innocently enough, with two lost brothers trying to find their way home, but you quickly find what kind of world they're lost in. Nothing is ever quite what you see it as, and everything from the artwork to the music has an air of nostalgia, and yet foreboding. The protagonists encounter many friends along their way but also many hardships, including eachother, in Over the Garden Wall.

Schoolhouse Rock is an unusual American cultural phenomenon. Nearly every person who grew up after the late Sixties is familiar with the series. How ubiquitous is it? I would predict that if you started humming "Conjunction Junction," "I'm Just a Bill," or "Three Is a Magic Number" in a room of a dozen people, three-quarters would know the reference and at least a couple would probably join in humming or singing the words.

This is unimpeachable stuff. To say that this 2-disc set is definitive is to do injustice to the word "definitive." EVERYTHING you would ever want to know about Schoolhouse Rock is here. All forty-six cartoons ever done for the series are included, even the "Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips" series that looked at computers. The electoral college toon that was done later is part of this collection, too.

The extras on the second disc are outstanding. In addition to Scooter Computer and the rarely seen "The Weather Show," you get a behind the scenes...
nostalgic, and still effective, edutainment
This material does seem a bit dated, so it's easy to forget that this was a radical idea when it first came out -- learning can be fun! It still is, thanks to the reissue of the material found on this two-disc set. Shortly after receiving a complimentary copy, my husband was singing along to old favorites and our toddler was having a grand old time learning the songs. All original 46 songs from the show are here, as well as the brand new "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College", about the electoral college, and a lost song, "The Weather Show". There are also three songs with the series' only continuing characters, Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips.

Mystery grows in the garden with this sleuthing female pair & SUBTITLES
Ex-cop, Laura Thyme (Pam Ferris-`Little Dorrit' `Jane Eyre' `Darling Buds of May' `Middlemarch'), is a housewife who loses her husband to a younger woman. Rosemary Boxer (Felicity Kendal-`Edward the King' `Camomile Lawn'), lectures on horticulture, but looses her university job. An odd pairing, which began from very different pasts. Starting a business together makes sense till mystery, sometimes a death, appears around too many corners. Amateur sleuthing once again hits the British TV screen, not new, but this is definitely different. Not just for women. It's good mystery, good criminal policing, and of course beautiful scenic filming (not just England). Even the gardener's will like this action.

Surprisingly human zombie drama
"Thoughtful" and "somber" are not words one traditionally uses to describe anything starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, especially since his career rebirth, but those words apply to Maggie, the most surprising film of his muscular career. Surprising because the film deals with a world in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, but you won't find Schwarzenegger stacking up piles of undead corpses or anything like that. Instead, Maggie is an affecting family drama that should appeal to fans of The Walking Dead rather than those expecting Dawn of the Dead.

Directed by graphic designer Henry Hobson, the atmosphere is a portrait of misery and despair in the wake of a zombie virus outbreak. Schwarzenegger is Wade, a stoic Midwestern farmer who tracks down his runaway daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin) and discovers she's been infected by "The Turn". While the worst of the chaos seems to be over, the world has settled into a "quarantine and eliminate" scenario...
A movie appropriately named--it is a story of a girl, not a zombie

I never review movies, but I felt I had to do this one. The number of negative reviews has me a bit riled. I really liked this movie, a lot. It's dark and quietly intense, the camera work is beautiful, and it felt wholly realistic. This is NOT a "zombie flick." It's about illness and fear, about being hated because you are sick. This is a movie about a girl, dealing with her own imminent death. It's about her love for her father, and his love for her. This is Maggie's story, regardless of the fame of her costar, and I am so very glad I decided to watch it.

NOT yet ANOTHER zombie movie...thank goodness
PHEW. Not another ZOMBIE movie as I feared as I began watching. This is a meditative, intimate film that is much more about accepting the death of a child and accepting your own death when you are still young and fall ill. It's about how to you want to live and how to you want to die and when we need to get beyond our attachment in order to spare suffering. That said - this isn't a spoonful of medicine. It's a beautifully shot film with a great chemistry between Arnold and Abigail. I was pleasantly surprised by the film and even more surprised that it had an emotional effect.

Also - while we have seen supposed "real life" approaches to the genre - this comes the closest I have ever seen to capturing what it might be like on an intimate scale - without all the men in hazmat suits and soldiers exterminating people.

Want a zombie movie? Move along...rent something else. This film is not scary except in the sense of the body dying/turning against you...
