Review :
"Which story do you prefer?" A film review from a literary perspective
Wow, this has been an exciting fall for literary adaptations! I read Yann Martel's Life of Pi a decade ago and thought it was fantastic storytelling. I cheered when it won the Man Booker Prize. So, I was quite excited to attend an advance screening recently with several members of my book group. I remembered the novel quite well in broad strokes, but not the fine detail. I didn't refresh my memory before watching the film, but was curious enough to reread Life of Pi in its entirety before writing this review. The film is very true to the novel in spirit and tone, but there are small changes, additions (generally positive), and elisions (some noteworthy).

The film opens similarly to the novel. The idea is the same, but the execution is slightly different. Different mediums require different storytelling tools. For instance, I believe most film-goers will readily recognize The Writer (portrayed by actor Rafe Spall, who replaced a distractingly famous Toby Maguire) as...
Beauty and Spirit, Both Beyond Words
This may be the hardest movie review I've ever written, somehow words don't
express it quite right ...

To begin, I saw Life of Pi in 3-D. A week later I went back and saw it again,
because I don't foresee having another chance. I expect the color and detail
will remain gorgeous in 2-D, and I definitely intend to buy the disc.

However the 3-D in this movie is spectacular. The tiger, Richard Parker, is
at the top of the list, but in fact the entire movie benefits tremendously
from 3-D. If you liked Avatar, you probably liked the marvelous animals.
And I'm sure in some scenes, Richard Parker is CGI'd to some extent. But
Life of Pi has a real earthly animal to work with, and you can argue there
is no animal on earth more beautiful or fierce than a tiger. That's part
of the genius of this movie, and I'm sure one reason James Cameron liked
it so much.

That brings me to another point about this movie, its...
A must-see masterpiece of the beauty of being alive
Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" is a masterpiece with some of the most beautiful and unforgettable images ever displayed on film. Not only did it give me an experience of the wonder in being alive while moving me to tears, but its story also encompassed a human life from childhood to mature age while dealing with pain and guilt that are part of the human experience.

Ang Lee isn't thought of as an Asian auteur in the class of Wong Kar-wai, Zhang Yimou or Lee Chang-dong. He's actually more of a commercial director than a personal artist, but what he does in transferring the "Life of Pi" from novel to screen is miraculous. Perhaps no director has ever captured the beauty and fear of the power of life, and when you look deep into the eyes of the tiger "Richard Parker", you see what Marlowe saw in Kurtz's eyes in Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness": a power so vast it dwarfs you with an awareness of your mortality, showing you your insignificance beside the powers of all life. What Ang...

Legendary director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) returns to his sci-fi origins in this epic adventure bursting with spectacular action and mind-blowing visual effects. A team of scientists and explorers travels to the darkest corners of the universe searching for the origins of human life. Instead they find a dark, twisted world that hides a terrifying threat capable of destroying them...and all mankind! You want an alien world created anew, with wonders and horrors lurking in its furrows? You go to Ridley Scott, of course, spectacle maker and pictorialist par excellence. So Prometheus is bound to be eye filling, with fully wrought planetary vistas and occasionally jaw-dropping visual coups. And did we use the word alien back there? Yes, folks, Prometheus is a prequel, in a sideways sort of fashion, to Scott's 1979 Alien original--or at least it's a long-distant stage setter for that story. This one begins with a space mission that could reveal the extraterrestrial roots of Earth, although what's buried out on the planet turns out to be much more complicated than expected. In the midst of suspenseful episodes (and a few contrived plot turns), Prometheus reaches for Big Answers to Big Questions, in a grand old sci-fi tradition. This lends the movie a hint of metaphysical energy, even if Scott's reach extends well, well beyond his grasp. The hokier moments are carried off with brio by Michael Fassbender (the robot on board), Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, and then you've got Noomi Rapace entering the badass hall of fame for a long, oh-no-they-didn't sequence involving radical surgery, which might just induce the vapors in a few viewers. Even if Prometheus has its holes, the sheer size of the thing is exciting to be around. Because this movie is gigantic. --Robert Horton.

A team of scientists journey through the universe on the spaceship "Prometheus" on a voyage to investigate Alien life forms. The team of scientists becomes stranded on an Alien world, and as they struggle to survive it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind. - WellardRockard

Synopsis

Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw captured the eyes of the international entertainment community with her commanding, unnerving and critically acclaimed portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the film adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest. Rapace began her acting career at the age of seven, in Iceland's In the Shadow of the Raven. She has since gone to appear in over twenty films and television shows. Born in Sweden, Rapace is the daughter of Flamenco singer Rogelio Duran.

Shaw, an archaeologist, discovers a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading her and a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey, aboard the spaceship Prometheus, to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Shaw and her team aboard the Prometheus are on nothing less than a journey to discover answers to some of life’s most profound questions. She is a scientist filled with faith and hope, but who transforms into a warrior when faced with the danger she encounters at her destination.
     Michael Fassbender as David
Michael Fassbender as David View larger
Michael Fassbender as David enjoyed a phenomenal run of critically acclaimed performances in 2011 and 2012, garnering numerous accolades and awards. The National Board of Review awarded Fassbender the Spotlight Award, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association named him Best Actor for his performances in Shame and Davide Cronenberg’s drama A Dangerous Method, in which Fassbender plays Carl Jung opposite Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen. Fassbender was also recently seen in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, as Erik Lehnsherr, better known as super-villain Magneto; as Rochester in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre; and as an assassin opposite Ewan McGregor and Gina Carano in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. Fassbender is a graduate of London's prestigious Drama Centre. His breakthrough role came as Sgt. Burton "Pat" Christenson in HBO's epic, award-winning miniseries Band of Brothers.

David is an android creation of Weyland Industries. While David possesses extraordinary intelligence and other capabilities, his principal tasks aboard the Prometheus are servile. David is however far more “human” than one might expect of a synthetic person. He is jealous and arrogant because he realizes that his knowledge is all-encompassing and therefore he is superior to the human crew members. David’s allegiances are unclear, and he can be very bold in the decisions he makes.
    Charlize Theron as Meredith Vickers
    Meredith Vickers View larger
Charlize Theron as Meredith Vickers demands the audience’s full attention as soon as she appears on screen. This South African captivated audiences as female serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the independent gem Monster. Charlize’s feature film debut was MGM’s 2 Days in the Valley, with Jeff Daniels. In 2001, Theron starred in the Warner Bros. tearjerker Sweet November alongside Keanu Reeves, as well as in Woody Allen’s Curse of the Jade Scorpion. In 2002 Theron starred opposite Patrick Swayze and Billy Bob Thornton in Waking Up in Reno, and opposite Kevin Bacon, Courtney Love, and Dakota Fanning in the feature film Trapped, directed by Luis Mandoki.

Vickers is a “suit” representing the interests of the mega-corporation funding the Prometheus’ journey to a distant, foreboding world. Her perspective on the mission is at odds with the rest of the crew’s. For Vickers, this epic, two-year journey to a distant planet has been boiled down to economics. But as with so much else about the mission, there are deeper layers and mysteries to Vickers’ ultimate goals.

He has also co-starred in the films Brooklyn’s Finest, The Kindness of Strangers and The Great Raid. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch Graduate Acting Program and a prolific stage actor, Marshall-Green earned a Drama League nomination for his work in King Lear with Kevin Klein at the Public Theatre, and Greg Kotis' Pig Farm at the Roundabout Theatre off-Broadway. He earned Lortel Award nominations for his performances in Dog Sees God and Neil LaBute's The Distance from Here, the latter also earning him a Drama Desk Ensemble Award.

Holloway is Shaw’s partner, both personally and professionally, in a quest for answers to some of humanity’s most important questions. Like Shaw, Holloway is a scientist with a thirst for answers, but he thinks the end of their search will yield very different results from those Shaw expects. While Shaw is the heart of the search, Holloway is its guts. He is constantly pushing the envelope, going to the extreme in everything he does. He is driven by the thrill of the quest.

Review :
4-Disc Collector's Edition Analysis
I'm reviewing the 4-Disc Collector's Edition. I'll go through each disc individually to give you an idea of what you'll be getting, and which version you should purchase. But first, let's briefly discuss the movie itself.

If you haven't seen the film yet, you're still probably aware of the polarized reception it received. Some love it, some hate it. Instead of giving you another opinion on why it's the best/worst film ever, let me tell you what to expect. PROMETHEUS is not a horror film. Certainly it has structural similarities to ALIEN, and there is one scene that I would consider very "stressful." But overall, the film is what I would classify as a "concept drama." That is, a drama that doesn't focus on characters, but rather on concept. Don't let any of the tense trailers fool you, this movie was meant as a discussion piece, not an adrenaline rush. You can decide whether it succeeds or fails when you watch it yourself.

Onto the discs...
So much promise ruined by such slapdash writing!
The Good:
-There have been various opinions about the special effects. Personally, I thought the visuals and soundtrack were awesome. They definitely made me favorably disposed towards this film.
-Michael Fassbender is spellbinding.

The Bad:
The main problem with the entire film is that nobody (other than Michael Fassbender) has any plausible motivation for the majority of their behavior. As a result the entire movie is basically just an exercise in convenience, much like your modern B-movie horror flick.

This was adorable. Of course it was cheesy and predictable at times but they added nice touches. The supporting cast did a phenomenal job at not overacting which I find very common with teen movies in which they're trying too hard. Definitely give this one a go if you want to watch something light and will leave you smiling.

This was a great family movie
This was a great family movie. We popped 4 bags of popcorn (five of us) and sat back and enjoyed the show. It had a few things some of our younger kids didn't get but overall this was a great popcorn movie. We enjoyed the show and I am happy they made it. I believe it has already been watched 3 or 4 times here in the house.

Hailee Steinfeld does a excellent job in making this spy/teen comedy fun and enjoyable!!!!
Oscar nominated Hailee Steinfeld and a top rated cast, does a excellent job in making this spy/teen comedy fun and enjoyable. Hailee plays agent 83,a spy who happens to be a 16 year old kid who wants to just be a normal teenager. She figures a way to do this but finds both her secret agent life and highschool dream complicating her life even more than she wanted. Hailee's comedic acting is natural and flows well. Everyone involved gives great performances that brings out the best in this film.
There are PG13, adult type jokes in this movie, so be careful if you have younger children in your family. Other than that, Hailee proves that she is worthy of her Oscar nomination by making her action character lovable,as well as believable in her reactions. Her acting skills is first rate...and yes she is barely 18...she really finishes homeschool and gets her high school diploma this year. Add to that she has another movie ,Pitch perfect 2 the # 1 movie this month, as well as the number...

When Tony Stark/Iron Man finds his entire world reduced to rubble, he must use all his ingenuity to survive, destroy his enemy and somehow protect those he loves. But a soul-searching question haunts him: Does the man make the suit... or does the suit make the man? Featuring spectacular special effects, Marvels' IRON MAN 3 is a wildly entertaining movie you'll watch again and again.

Tony Stark/Iron Man

Eccentric genius, billionaire, philanthropist Tony Stark is the armored super-hero known as Iron Man. Decompressing from his heroic, near-self-sacrificial action as iron Man that saved New York City from annihilation, Tony finds himself unable to sleep and plagued by worry and trepidation. When his world is destroyed and those closest to him threatened, Tony must find a way to save them and in the process find him again.

Pepper has progressed from Tony Stark's assistant to the head of Stark Industries, pausing along the way to fall in love with Tony as well. Bright, loyal and honest, Pepper understands Tony Stark more than anyone and sometimes that can be both a worrisome and dangerous thing.

Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes / Iron Patriot
Rhodey is the Liaison between Stark Industries and the U.S. Air Force. He is one of Tony Stark's few trusted friends and most of the time has the patience to deal with the impulsive genius. Rhodey has a new suit of War Machine armor in a red, silver, and blue patriotic design. When suited up, Rhodey becomes Iron Patriot.

The Mandarin
Mandarin is the sinister head of the terrorist organization known as The Ten Rings, from which all the actors of extreme terrorism plaguing the world appear to emanate. Option 2: Any one of the following standalone providers (with no Disney Movies Anywhere account registration required): iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant Video, or Google play.

I have a VUDU account, which I selected, so I now have a digital copy of Iron Man 3 (HDX quality) with the ability to download or stream the movie in HD.

Can I ask a favor of everyone for whom the above information was useful? I hated this movie, I like it more everytime I rewatch it
The first time I saw this movie I really didn't like it, I had just come off the high of "The Avengers" and let me make it clear, this one isn't as good. That said it is significantly better than Iron Man 2 and that's because the story is deeper and direct. There's a lot less focus on explosions and fancy effects (although there is plenty of that) and more on dialogue and character development.

One thing I like about this movie is that you get to learn more about Tony Stark, as much as I loved his arrogance in IM1, 2 at the end of Avengers he was humbled and that continues in this one. On the one hand I love the suits and the fancy technology but it's Robert Downey's sarcasm and wit that make him so great for this franchise.

Yes there is a big plot twist but it by no means ruins the movie and while I was not a fan of the ending, you can see where things are going towards Avengers 2.

It may not be for you, my only advice is to make sure you watch it...
A Rousing Movie; Different from What I Expected
Let me start by saying that I can understand why there are a lot of split opinions about IRON MAN 3. It's a film full of misdirection and deceptions, and I was a little distressed by a couple of them - which would give away too much to detail here. Suffice it to say that there were a couple of moments I felt somewhat cheated; and though I'll be vague about it I can say it involved Mandarin. Still, read on; while I gave the movie four stars, I believe down the road I might very well revise this to a five. I'll explain...

First of all, rest assured there is A LOT of action. And there are a lot of the Iron Suits, too...it's just that Tony Stark isn't often the one IN the suit. I found myself often frustrated by that fact: Iron Man interruptus, if you will. Either the suits were off on their own, or they were on other people, or they weren't working properly...something that seemed to occur almost constantly.

I saw it in Imax 3D, and it was well worth the extra...

Twihards, rejoice! In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, love for Bella and Edward is not only triumphant--it's a love story for the ages. The finale in the wildly successful Twilight teen vampire romance saga will satisfy every passionate fan, and yet is broad enough in its appeal that even those who think they aren't invested in the Bella-Edward story will be drawn in as well. Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is breathtakingly beautiful, with sumptuous cinematography showing off the stark beauty of the Pacific Northwest, especially in the dead of winter. And speaking of stark beauty, Bella (Kristen Stewart) is even more ravishing than ever. She awakens at the beginning of Breaking Dawn, Part 2 as a "newborn" vampire, having been "turned" as she was dying during the birth of her and Edward's (Robert Pattinson) half-vampire daughter. Vampire Bella flies through the forests barefoot in a royal-blue sheath, no hint of post-baby body weighing her or her new superpowers down. Bella and Edward waste no time making good use of the cozy new cottage in the woods and its enticing bedroom. "Why do we need a bedroom?" Bella asks Edward. "We're vampires, we don't sleep." Edward, adoration in his eyes, quickly shows her the answer.

And their daughter? Well, little baby Renesmee starts out as a slightly creepy computer-generated animation creature, but as she grows--very quickly--into girlhood, she's played with winsome solemnity by young Mackenzie Foy. The girl is "imprinted" at birth to werewolf Jacob (hunky Taylor Lautner, often shirtless), who will from then on be bound to the wolf pack in a deep and special way. Yet Breaking Dawn, Part 2 carries true, operatic-style action as well as the love-triangle drama from earlier films. Because of the birth of the child vampire, the powerful Volturi in Rome are alerted, and, led by Aro (played by Michael Sheen, who appears to be having entirely too much fun), come to the Northwest for a shattering showdown over the fate of the Cullens. The confrontation, as directed by the deft Bill Condon, is intense and creatively choreographed (and fairly violent, given the film's PG-13 rating), with dark, wild music accompanying the Volturi's malevolent intentions and our heroes' fierce devotion to one another. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 demonstrates that love and family can surmount nearly every obstacle. And sometimes love can truly be forever. --A.T. Hurley

Review :
"And now forever?" asked Edward. "And now forever" whispered Bella. "Over my dead body" hissed the Fate...
I just saw the part 2 of "Breaking Dawn" (in my country it opened on November 14) and I was very impressed. I loved this skillful and very faithful adaptation of the final chapters of "Twilight" saga. WARNING: this review contains limited SPOILERS and also some slightly dirty jokes...

As probably everybody already knows, this film begins with Bella Cullen (former Bella Swan) making her first steps as a newly created vampire, very soon after the extremely difficult birth of her daughter Renesmee. Things that happened at the end of the previous part are discreetly reminded to us by the extraordinary opening scene, in which we can enjoy the beauty of state of Washington, listen to the perfectly adapted music and finally watch how the nature changes when winter comes - and all of this is somehow connected to Bella's transformation. I was very impressed by those first scenes - it is rare to see the opening credits put to such a good use.

Bella's first days as newborn...
HATE TO SEE IT END
The best movie series ever and this ending is better than the book. I wished Meyers would take up with the story of the child and Jacob

Wonderful Ending to the Saga
I won't spoil the movie by telling readers about the new part. You will have to go see the movie for that.
I will say that I cannot imagine a better way to end this story. It was everything I could have hoped for, except the promise of yet another book and movie!
It was so thoughtful to include the full cast of all the movies in the credits at the end of the movie. So great to see all those faces again.
What an amazing four years this has been for all of us fans! After reading the books, I dreamed about having them made into movies. I even pictured Kristen Stewart as Bella! None of it has been anthing but delightful.
Thanks to Stephenie Meyer for writing the only love story I've ever been able to appreciate, to Melissa Rosenberg for turning it into fabulous screenplays and all the other magical movie people for giving us the lovliest fairytale of our time.
Go see Breaking Dawn - Part II

Academy Award nominees Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper star in this epic, riveting crime drama about the unbreakable bond between fathers and sons. Luke (Gosling) gives up his job as a motorcycle stunt performer in order to provide for his new family.  Avery (Cooper), an ambitious rookie cop, struggles to make his way in a corrupt police department.  Their two worlds collide when Luke takes part in a string of bank robberies and the consequences of their shocking confrontation will reverberate into the next generation.   From the acclaimed director of Blue Valentine and co-starring Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta, this engaging and powerful thrill ride has critics raving, “5 stars!  The Place Beyond the Pines is huge in its ambition, huge in its achievement!” (Mick LaSalle, The San Francisco Chronicle)"The place beyond the pines" is an idiomatic translation of the Native American word Schenectady, which is the tucked-away upstate New York setting where the triptych dramas of The Place Beyond the Pines unfold with deft, emotional grace. This second feature from director Derek Cianfrance is an ambitious reach into tragedy, honor, and responsibility experienced between fathers and sons. Even though the result falls a little short of his grasp, there's no denying the beauty and passion in the story he tells with such measured artistry and eloquent attention to process and form. Unlike his impressive debut, Blue Valentine, which hewed to a structure that lurched forward and back in observing the beginning and ending of a marriage, Pines follows a linear chronology in its three acts, but it is similarly jarring in the way the narrative plays out so unexpectedly. Act one follows Luke (Ryan Gosling), a motorcycle daredevil on the carnival circuit who discovers that the fling he had last year with Romina (Eva Mendes) left him with a son. The shell of tattoos and leather jacket Luke hides under can't disguise the effect this new reality has on him. He decides to stick around and try to weasel into the role of being a father, turning to bank robbery as a means of providing the support he believes he must. The story's second act abruptly leaves Luke behind, shifting the focus to Avery (Bradley Cooper), a rookie local cop with a law degree who truly wants to do good, even though police corruption is endemic even on the nice streets he patrols in his placid place beyond the pines. Avery also has a new son, but as much as Luke yearned to shower love on his boy, circumstances have led Avery to shut down and deny any feeling toward his child or his wife (Rose Byrne). Part three takes place 15 years later, when fate brings the two boys together and the legacy left to them by their fathers comes home to roost in an equally unpredictable fashion. AJ and Jason (Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan) are thrown together in the unpleasantly realistic dance of teenage angst as Avery and Luke's sons. They are at first unaware of their fathers' association until the inevitable revelation and partial role reversal that winds the movie down. All the performances are terrific and Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper are at the top of their game, though their interaction is limited to one brief sequence. Gosling feels a little typecast as the moody, stone-faced, quick-tempered guy we've seen him play before, but his entire body is engaged in the way he snaps from calm to rage at the emotions brewing inside. Cooper is restrained and playing somewhat against type as a man who should be the hero, even though he's got more villain in him than the movie outright admits. Cianfrance displays an enormous advance as an auteur. The Place Beyond the Pines may not be the fully realized work he intended, but it is an absorbing and often deeply moving exercise in family dynamics and destinies that are never certain. --Ted Fry

Another great film portraying the weight and cruciality of fatherhood
This movie had me from beginning to end. I loved the depth of all the underlying themes that intersected throughout the movie. The significance of a man's role in the family and in a marriage is heavily explored from start to finish. All the main characters appeared very raw and believable. The casting was expert and the complexities of each character were portrayed very subtly without the need for much dialogue, which is always the genius of a well-written movie. The sins of our fathers was a reoccuring theme throughout, and you can feel the inadequacies, hopes, and fears of each character as time unfolds. What gets me the most is witnessing the sweetness and kindness behind each character despite their depravity or past mistakes. This is a very moving story of humanity. You can't help but empathize with each character.

A rare occasion where EVERYONE should listen to the VERY positive reviews
Stunning. Amazing. Beautiful. Powerful. Genuinely Effective. That my friends is what can be said about The Place Beyond the Pines. I had been hearing very good things about this movie for a long time and today I finally got to watch it. My oh my what a movie. I have yet to see Man of Steel, American Hustle, or any other movie besides 42 that has really impressed me. But this is already one of the best films of 2013. Ryan Gosling took a big leap from his lackluster performance in Gangster Squad and gave a strong standout performance as Luke Glanton. Supporting cast includes Eva Mendes as Romina, Bradley Cooper(he is getting better with each role as an actor) as Avery Cross, Ray Liotta as Delucca who also did a great job (there has to be a guy everyone loves to hate) and Dane Dehaan (who is also a great actor for his age) as Jason Glanton. The whole cast did a beyond superb job. The Place Beyond the Pines makes you forget that the people in it are just characters; you generally come to...
The first exceptional film of 2013
Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) has a good thing going with a traveling carnival. He's got a pocketful of fame thanks to his motorcycle stuntman status and makes just enough money to get by. He meets up with Romina (Eva Mendes), an old fling, in Schenectady, New York and finds out that their one night together resulted in a little one year old boy named Jason. Luke quits the carnival and intends to provide for his son, but Romina has moved on and is currently in a relationship with Kofi (Mahershala Ali). Luke crosses paths with a mechanic named Robin (Ben Mendelsohn) who talks Luke into robbing a few banks to get some quick cash to support his newfound fatherhood. But Luke gets addicted to the thrill of the hunt and the money and gets overzealous, which attracts the New York police department and rookie cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper) in particular.

Director Derek Cianfrance last worked with Ryan Gosling in "Blue Valentine" from 2010, which got a noticeable amount of attention...

A psychological thriller - with laughs
Possible spoilers

Sometimes some people are too good to be true.

Dan Stevens plays US Special Forces soldier David, returning from the Middle East to turn his charm on the family of a deceased veteran with whom he served. Despite initial suspicion, the family take David in, allowing him to fill the gaping hole in their lives. David has that special ability to soothe with extreme politeness and preternatural ability to insinuate himself where he is most needed. But when local townsfolk start turning up dead, Maika Monroe - Anna begins to suspect that David isn't quite as attractive as he seems. Playing to a more mainstream audience than his previous outings, director Adam Wingard increasingly ludicrous chiller/shocker has plenty of tongue and cheek with this genre convention, unafraid to laugh at itself as the body count rises and as David's knowing nods and winks become manic twitches. As we move toward a surreal third act, the tension dissolves into goofy...
One of my favorites of the year
It's a real shame that this movie didn't get the kind of audience it deserved. And from reading these reviews it seems like a lot of people just didn't "get" this movie at all. It's a super fun thriller that's filled with plenty of action and some horror movie elements as well. But it also has a great sense of humor... it's not supposed to be taken super seriously. Keyword here is FUN. It's a throwback to a fun 80's action flick mixed with a John Carpenter horror movie.

Last two things about the movie I want to mention... the soundtrack is really terrific. Sounds great on it's own, but in the context of the movie it's super effective. The other thing is the acting... it was good on all accounts, but I was particularly impressed by Dan Stevens in the main role. His character David is handsome, charming, and polite, but has a real current of malice running belong the surface.

I have seen some people comparing this movie to Drive... I can see that...
Creepy, Funny, Action-packed, and Thought-provoking
Underrated at best, this film is sure to please if you're a fan of suspense. Dan Stevens is like a mix between Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, but hides his English accent so well you'd never guess he had one. He plays David, a soldier returning from duty who visits the family of his fallen comrade. But suspicious things start happening since he came to stay. This movie is fantastic. It's like a mix between Drive, 80s horror movies, and 80s action movies. The premise is entertaining, the script smartly written, and the action plentiful. The suspense is tangible and the comedy surprising. But the real standout in this movie is the soundtrack. This soundtrack is amazing. Each song is perfect for each scene. And it helps to make the suspense all the more real. Don't miss a chance to see The Guest.

Review :
THIS YEAR'S SLEEPER
I was taken in by the opening credits as an outline of a brain turns into a city. I am a big sucker for that microcosm/ macrocosm stuff.

Edward has writer's block. He has a book contract for some reason, yet hasn't written a word. His girlfriend, who was his meal ticket leaves him. Bummed out he decides to go live on a bunk bed at Dad's place in New Jersey, but then bumps into his ex-brother-in-law, who is a drug dealer. He offers Edward a pill that increases a person's use of their brain. They can recall everything they have seen or read and can correlate it to increase intelligence. The smarter a person is to begin with, the more data they have to work with. Edward is a smart guy to begin with, so he is able to start his book. The downside is that the pill wears off. Not only does one lose the abilities, but they get a little ADD, and throw up like a heroin addict. Too much of the pill causes a Mr. Hyde type of character including blackouts. Edward's supplier is murdered...
Must see for action junkies!!!
When we watched the preview we were drawn in by the action and with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro we figured it had to be good. We really liked the storyline and how Bradley Cooper uses being limitless to maximize his potential and with De Niro as the bad guy it just clicks, especially with the chemistry these guys have. This movie is filled with twists and turns over a pill that lets Cooper use 100% of his brain and of course what will happen when the pills run out? This movie definitely delivered on our expectations and if you like action movies it should exceed yours as well......

Unique Plot & Entertaining
A blocked writer (played by Bradley Cooper) with average intelligence and a very low drive for success comes into possession of an unreleased drug that makes him a super genius. The movie's premise is that we only use a very small percentage of our brains, and the drug gets the body to use 100% of the brain.

In the movie, the writer only has a limited supply of the drug with no way to get more. The plot thickens since the drug has side effects and others are after his supply.

If I could give half stars, I'd give this movie a 4 1/2. It was very good, and definitely worth seeing, but there have been some movies more deserving of the full 5 stars. Still, this movie has a lot going for it. Here what's good:

1. The premise of this movie is unique. It's a great fantasy. Who wouldn't want that level of smarts. He's able to protect himself, make a killing on Wall Street and even impress women by ordering dinner speaking Italian. Just pop a pill and you're able...

Bonus materials
If you're buying this collection, it is obvious you're a fan of the Pegg/Frost/Wright movies. This review clarifies the bonus materials found in the Blu-Ray collection of the three movies in the "Cornetto Trilogy."

The product description is a little vague on the bonus materials that go with this release. Sometimes disk collections skimp on the bonus materials that are found in the normal release. Fortunately, this is not the case with this collection. The disks are loaded with commentaries, out takes, deleted scenes, featurettes, etc., etc., etc.

The back of the box indicates: "Over six hours of apocalyptic bonus features! Including 9 feature commentaries, 11 featurettes, out-takes, deleted scenes and much, much more."

By the way, if you finish these and want more of the same vein, you really must check out "Spaced." It was a 14-epidode TV series, and an absolute must for geeks that love Pegg/Frost/Wright creations.

A SLICE OF FRIED GOLD
Chances are you don’t really need to read reviews on this. If you’re looking at this item, you probably want to buy it. But maybe you’re wondering:

Is it three boxes with a wrap to hold them, or one box with three discs?

I can answer that: It’s one box. It has one of those inserts that holds a disc on both sides, plus one on the back part of the inside of the case. One box, three discs, and a cardboard wrapper because who like trees, anyways?

The ultimate three flavors Cornetto Trilogy!!
Three slices of fried gold are what I call the movies in this collection. I can't really decide which I like the best because each definitely has its own special "flavor". Despite sharing hilarious comedy gags and themes of maturity & friendship.

Shaun of the Dead - is a love letter to George Romero Zombie films & the movie that serves to introduce the talented team of: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost to mainstream audiences.

Hot Fuzz - is a hilarious nod to buddy cop films & has a lot of great over the top action.

The World's End - wraps up "The Trilogy" and is another great nod to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Also serving to prove that you really can't go home again.

This Blu-ray collection is also packed with extras for each film giving the fan plenty of behind the scenes Cornetto comedy.

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in SKYFALL, the 23rd installment of the longest-running film franchise in history. In SKYFALL, Bond's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past returns to haunt her. 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. When Bond's latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows - aided only by field agent Eve (Naomie Harris) - following a trail to the mysterious Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves. For longtime viewers of the James Bond films, one of the larger pleasures of the series--aside from the eternally awesome jetpacks and ejector seats--has been watching it adapt itself to the times, scooting its unflappable central character past the Cold War to the Disco Age to beyond the Millennium seemingly without breaking a sweat. Skyfall, Daniel Craig's third turn in the tux, lands itself firmly in the utmost tier of the franchise, delivering the expected goods as well as a rather unusual vein of introspection. Celebrating the 50th year of Bond's existence, it continues cultivating the gritty, back-to-basics vibe of Casino Royale, while also slowly letting some of the more fancifully escapist elements in through the filters. Kicking off with a humdinger of a car/bike/train chase in Istanbul, the plot finds an aging 007 on uneasy footing, struggling to get back in the game while his boss M (a magnificent Judi Dench) is marked for death by a mysterious assassin. As Bond draws closer to his target (Javier Bardem, having an absolute blast), he uncovers some details that draw uncomfortably close to his own origins. Director Sam Mendes, an Oscar winner for American Beauty, ably brings his game to the blockbuster level, keeping the globe-hopping narrative moving at a swift pace while also allowing plenty of room for the cast (including newcomers Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris) to do their thing. For all of the talent assembled on both sides of the camera, however, Skyfall's true MVP proves to be director of photography Roger Deakins, who gives an astonishingly ravishing look to the proceedings, culminating in a battle in a Shanghai skyscraper that may very well be the best fight scene the series has ever had. By the time of the surprisingly moving finale, set in a location far, far away from the standard Evil Lair, Mendes and Craig and Co. have reminded the viewer of exactly what these films can do. Where it ends is a perfect beginning. Extras on the disc include a wry and informative director's track, a more laid-back commentary from the producers and production designer, and an exhaustively detailed look behind the scenes. Review :
Brilliant...Can't Recommend This Movie Enough
Being the year of the 50th anniversary of the beloved super spy, the 23rd Bond installment had a lot to live up to. While Casino Royale was a worthy and thrilling reboot to the franchise, Quantum of Solace fell flat with critics and fans. To make matters more interesting, MGM has had financial woes over the last number of years and needed a hit to reinvigorate the studio. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Skyfall.

Not only does the movie qualify as one of the most action-packed and entertaining movies of the year, it ranks on my list as one of the best Bond flicks to date. As has come to be expected, Craig is terrific as the British spy, portraying the character with charm and intensity. The action is top notch and the story is superbly written. Among my favorite moments were the blistering opening sequences, the introduction of the film's villain, and the intense final act, which finds Bond cornered yet unafraid. The real treat, however, is Bardem's role as the sinister...
The best Bond film in many years
Although I remain a loyal fan to the Bond of my youth (Roger Moore), Daniel Craig is, in my opinion, one of the very best of the rest. In Skyfall he demonstrated how he has matured into the character - and the writing and execution of virtually every other aspect of this film are superior to his first two outings. Some viewers are finding this Bond outing a bit slow moving. I didn't, although it is admittedly more restrained than many other films from the series. Nevertheless, I found it engaging from beginning to end. I thought certain parts of the film packed an emotional punch seldom felt in other Bond films.

It is interesting how the public's expectations for Bond have changed. When View to A Kill premiered critics blasted the level of violence and even Roger Moore said he thought at least one scene in that movie went too far. The current take on Bond is far more violent and the bad guys are often presented in a much darker light than the villains of old - even if...
So good I've seen it twice already!!
I am a die hard Sean-Connery-as-James-Bond fan. I like most of Roger's and a couple of Pierce's. I was not happy when I first learned of Daniel Craig as the new Bond. Daniel who? Was my first reaction. Not another Lazenby, I thought...
I like Casino Royale, but it took me a couple of watches on DVD for it to grow on me. I didn't hate Quantum of Solace as much as others seem to, but then I saw Skyfall..... I love this movie so much that not one day has gone by when I haven't thought of it at least once. I saw it twice in one week, and I never do that when movies are in theaters. The writers of this film must be brought back for the next one, yes it has some minor similarities to The Dark Knight movies, but so what. I can not wait for the Blu Ray release. I hate to admit it, but this may just be my new favorite Bond movie. The only thing that would make it perfect for me would be if Connery were still young enough to play Bond. The opening sequence, the action, Javier as the...

Review :
(BLU RAY UPDATE) 4 1/2 stars for a visually arresting sci-fi beauty
There may be spoilers.

Some critics have panned this new film from director and co-writer Joseph Kosinski, in this his second film ("TRON: Legacy"), as being highly derivative. But let's face it, how many films are so fresh and new that they delve into uncharted territory? In any case, don't care. Whether it's a drama, a comedy, a horror movie or even a romantic comedy, it's how well it is delivered that counts. And this film delivers.

Like "TRON" the film is visually arresting. Seen on a big screen, the sets are huge but sparse, drawing the audience in. Set in a war-ravaged Earth of 2077 devoid of humans, all of whom have resettled on a moon of Saturn, only Jack (terrific Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) remain. They are partners (both romantic and professionally) whose mission is to watch over the drones that patrol the area for a smattering of "Scavs" who were the defeated invaders. While Earth won the war, they lost the planet which...
Oblivion in IMAX (Blu-ray Update)
When I first saw a trailer for Oblivion, I felt like it was custom made for me. Then, last night, while watching it in IMAX,they started playing a Led Zeppelin song in the movie, I knew it was made for me. Oblivion was a mix of the greatest Sci-Fi already made and yet it was still unique in its own way. Other reviewers have said that the writing is better in the first half and that the movie becomes predictable or not as strong in the second half. I completely disagree. I felt like the script, while borrowing bits from other Sci-Fi, remained engaging and well-done through out the whole movie. If you see this movie in IMAX, in addition to being blown away by the incredible surround sound, you will actually see more of the picture than in a traditional theater. They opened it up for most of the movie. There were a few parts (only one I noticed was around the beginning) where it was the more narrow widescreen picture. For the rest of the time it filled up the huge IMAX screen. The...
Entertaining Sci-fi Flick!
Oblivion wasn't a dynamic bang `em up, annihilate the universe sci-fi. It was steady, uncomplicated and extremely enjoyable. Cruise's performance is good (not a big fan of his, but he does have that charisma that is caught on film and makes it work extremely well). The premise was really good; the plot was a twist I did not even anticipate, but it was a really nice surprise for a sci-fi flick. The visuals and special effects are outstanding! Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable and entertaining Saturday night movie. For you sci-fi fans who need a fix, give this a look-see! Highly Recommend!

The World's End Twenty years after their first epic pub crawl attempt, the “five musketeers” reunite to complete the ultimate challenge – one night, five friends, twelve bars – a boozy quest on which only the strongest will survive. They soon realize that reaching their final pub, The World’s End, may be the least of their troubles.  They’re having the time of their lives, ready to take on the world…but tonight they may have to save it.  Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reteam with director Edgar Wright in this wildly entertaining thrill ride that critics call “sheer comic perfection” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).  Hot Fuzz Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is a big-city cop who can't be stopped - but he's making everyone else on the force look bad. When he is reassigned to a small, quiet town, he struggles with this new, seemingly idyllic world and his bumbling partner (Nick Frost). Their dull existence is interrupted by several grisly and suspicious accidents, and the crime-fighting duo turn up the heat and hand out high-octane, car-chasing, gun-fighting big-city justice in this hilarious hit critics are calling "Outrageous! Uproariously Funny!" (Thelma Adams, US Weekly). Shaun of the Dead There comes a day in every man's life when he has to get off the couch… and kill some zombies. When flesh-eating zombies are on the hunt for a bite to eat, it's up to slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his best pal Ed (Nick Frost), to save their friends and family from becoming the next entreĆ©. Novelist Stephen King gushes Shaun of the Dead is “a 10 on the fun meter and destined to be a cult classic" and Newsweek calls it "a bloody hoot!"

Spartacus, the genre-defining epic from director Stanley Kubrick, is the legendary tale of a bold gladiator (Kirk Douglas) who led a triumphant Roman slave revolt. Featuring a cast of screen legends such as Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons, John Gavin and Tony Curtis, this uncut and fully restored masterpiece is an inspirational true account of man’s eternal struggle for freedom.

Review :
Classic Hollywood epic looks great-Review for Criterion version DVD
If you're a fan of the movie "Spartacus", this is the version to get; the Universal DVD is as bare bones as they get with just the movie. The Criterion version looks great. The facelift the film received help return much of its luster. Kubrick later disowned his version of the epic Hollywood Sword & Sandal genre, but Kubrick brings much of his sensibility to bear; the fight sequences and epic vistas bring to mind Kubrick's work on Paths of Glory and 2001. True, this isn't a complete Kubrick picture; Kubrick had nothing to do with the screenplay and Douglas had all but cast the picture in collaboration with director Anthony Mann (dismissed after butting heads with Douglas one too many times).

Is it Kubrick's finest film? Well, frankly no it isn't. It's an interesting mishmash between Kubrick's detached, ironic style and Hollywood glitz. Spartacus is Kubrick for people who don't care for Kubrick's detached style. It doesn't measure up to Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 or A...
The Original "Gladiator" - beautifully restored on DVD!
Long before Russell Crowe picked up his sword and battled corrupt Roman emperors, Kirk Douglas showed him the way in "Spartacus". This epic 1960 film still ranks as one of the best performances in Douglas's distinguished career, and it marked his second collaboration with famed director Stanley Kubrick. Even more than "Gladiator", "Spartacus" is based on a real historical event, although it greatly exaggerates the actual history. Spartacus was a Roman slave in the first century AD who became a gladiator for the Romans, but then escaped and formed an enormous army (estimated at anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000) of freed slaves and gladiators. For the next year this army, under Spartacus's leadership, terrorized the Italian countryside, until they were finally trapped and destroyed in battle with the still-powerful Roman Army.

As an old-fashioned Hollywood epic, "Spartacus" doesn't disappoint the viewer - there are epic battle scenes, high drama, and some great acting by...
great movie, TERRIBLE blu-ray
Great movie. Horrible, horrible blu-ray. Maybe the worst blu-ray disc I've seen. Do not buy, wait for a recall. It's so blatantly awful even non-cinephiles will notice.

Here's the main problem: most all the film grain and fine detail have been completely wiped out in a clumsy attempt to remove video noise. Which begs the question: so what's the point of owning it on blu-ray?

What's worse is that it didn't have to be this way. But I guess this is what happens when an indifferent media conglomerate has complete control over a masterpiece. Check out Robert Harris's (the man who restored the film years ago) extremely negative review of this blu-ray on the web. I thought maybe he was overdoing it a bit, but no. It's even worse than he says. If you have the Criterion DVDSpartacus - Criterion Collection, just hang on to it for now.
