Almost clicked the order button, but due to my love of the extended versions of the original trilogy, I decided to do a little research before I made that mistake. in doing so, I discovered that the Blue-Ray/DVD set for release on March 19th will contain only the theatrical version of the movie. Warner Bros is including a teaser trailer containing Dragon Smaug with this version in order to entice people to buy it. The extended version of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' will be released in time for Christmas 2013. As with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Warner Bros. is trying to stick it to the consumer again by hoping people will buy both versions. Sorry, WB... I can wait another nine months. In the meantime, I'll rent a copy to satisfy my urge to see it sooner.

What we can expect from the Extended Edition.
The extended edition for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug will contain 25 minutes of new scenes, in contrast with An Unexpected Journey's 13 minutes. It also has over 9 hours of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, detailing the monumental task of bringing the incredible world of Middle Earth to the screen. 2. A LOT MORE OF MIRKWOOD. I was surprised and pleased to learn that two scenes from the book were actually filmed: Bilbo, Thorin and company crossing a slimy, enchanted river in Mirkwood. Contains some humor, some amazing sets, some amazing Martin...
Tremendous fun, and a great expansion of the world of Middle-earth!
First off, I have no trouble admitting this movie is not perfect: I think the editing could have been tighter; I would have preferred a bit more focus on Bilbo's part of the story; and the filmmakers' determination to ignore all laws of physics, (especially in the 'molten gold' sequence), is truly impressive.

So, now that that's out of the way: I ADORED this film! Flaws and all, I loved it, and after watching three times in theater, found I only loved it more.

Yes, it strays from the book, and embellishes the story left and right; the thing is, those embellishments come from Jackson and co.'s deep love of the material, and their desire to spend just as long in Middle-earth as they possibly can. They LOVE this world, and it shows. They want to show us everything, and bring to life details the books only hinted at. Even when they make choices I wouldn't have made, I'm grateful to them for bringing this world to life so richly.

Let me preface my review with two points: 1) Since childhood, I've always loved reading the Tolkien's "Hobbit" and always will. 2) I am also extremely appreciative of how Jackson expanded the story into a far fuller, richer telling of the embattled dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield.

The Battle of the Five Armies starts-in immediately with action and seldom slows down. If it feels like this is an unusually fast-paced film, it's because it is. However, at no time did I feel overwhelmed in trying to keep track of all the goings-on. And I can also assure you that despite such great battles as Helms Deep and Minas Tirith (Battle of the Pelennor Fields), the Battle For Erebor will show few similarities. Yes, Jackson achieved a uniqueness in all three gigantic pitched battles throughout the entire saga, which I found to be impressive in furtherance of each battle's high entertainment value. This film's central battle won't disappoint.
