Two Movies for the Price of One! Darkness and Light!
LEGEND never really found an audience in theatres despite Ridley Scott and Universal's constant tinkering with the final cut. Seems many movies of this era were victims of audience test screenings, and the desire to give people a commercial product that went down easy -- see BRAZIL for a prime example of how studios think (the "love conquers all" version). So LEGEND was severely edited and rescored with a hasty (but often effective score by TANGERINE DREAM). It was short on plot and long on art direction, but sumptuous visuals and an all-out acting job by Tim Curry and make-up artist Rick Bottin made the movie an easy favorite of many fantasy fans. The movie looks stunning, and the story is a universal plunge into archetypes. Nothing wrong with that, it certainly worked for STAR WARS!

jerry goldsmith is widely considered to be one of the best creators of movie music alive. he once gave an interview where he said that the score for 'Legend' was his favorite thing he'd ever written. when this movie was released, however, the people at the studio decided that "the kids" just wouldn't get it, so they replaced it with a pop-y bit from tangerine dream. furthermore, scenes were cut, and the action was speeded up so that the movie could be marketed to a younger crowd. problem solved: this is a 2 disc set so you can compare and contrast the two versions: one with jerry goldsmith's score restored and finally bringing the "international" cut to the u.s., the other being the u.s. theatrical cut. this movie is incredible, but certainly not for everyone. the early tom cruise is fun to watch, tim curry is his usual over-the-top self, and mia sara is quite attractive as the princess(?) lilly. at its heart, this is a good vs. evil quest film, with the...

Watchmen is set in the mid-1980s, a time of increased nuclear tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, as Richard Nixon is enjoying his fifth term as president and the world's superheroes have been forcibly retired. (As you can probably tell, the mix of authentic history and alternate reality is heady.) Things begin with a bang: the mysterious high-rise murder of the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a masked hero with a checkered past, puts the rest of the retired superhero community on alert. The credits sequence, a series of tableaux that wittily catches us up on crime-fighting backstory, actually turns out to be the high point of the movie. Thereafter we meet the other caped and hooded avengers: the furious Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the inexplicably naked Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup, amidst much blue-skinned, genital-swinging digital work), Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman), Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson), and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode). The corkscrewing storytelling, which worked well in the comic book, gives the movie the strange sense of never quite getting in gear, even as some of the episodes are arresting. Director Zack Snyder (300) doesn't try to approximate the electric impact of the original (written by Alan Moore--who declined to be credited on the movie--and illustrated by Dave Gibbons) but retains careful fidelity to his source material. That doesn't feel right, even with the generally enjoyable roll-out of anecdotes. Even less forgivable is the blah acting, excepting Jeffrey Dean Morgan (lusty) and Patrick Wilson (mellow). Watchmen certainly fills the eyes, although less so the ears: the song choices are regrettable, especially during an embarrassing mid-air coupling between Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II as they unite their--ah--Roman numerals. In the end it feels as though a huge work of transcription has been successfully completed, which isn't the same as making a full-blooded movie experience. --Robert Horton

Additional changes for Director's Cut
The director's cut runs about 25 minutes longer, and incorporates more elements from the comics, adds more violence, as well as more shots of Dr. Manhatten's schlong. Some of the previous scenes are reworked with additional dialogue. Information has been supported by sites such as AICN etc.

Overall, the storyline and conversations are better fleshed out, and this version is truer to the comics. The largest additional addition is that of Hollis Mason's death, which is spectacularly directed to the score of the Intermezzo from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana (think Godfather III).

(1) Rorschach gets additional dialogue, some straight from the comics.

(2) When Rorschach searches the Comedian's apartment shortly after the opening scene, he encounters two cops still stationed there. He fights briefly with them before jumping back out the window.

(3) Conversation between Dan and Rorschach (beans scene) is extended.

(4) All flashbacks...
Movie is of course awesome...so is Nite Owl Ship!
This is just to point out something not mentioned in the description. As you know, this comes with an exclusive Nite Owl Ship.

First, it looks cool. Nice details, looks 'properly used'. But here's the thing. After I unpacked it I noticed a slip of paper at the bottom of the box. It described how to replace the batteries in the Nite Owl Ship. Wait... BATTERIES?

So I then discovered the ship is made to easily come off it's stand. Under it there is a battery compartment. It requires a small Phillips head to open. I opened it to confirm... yup a battery compartment with two batteries!

But for the life of me I could not figure out what the Nite Owl Ship was suppose to do! I saw no switch. So I even tried talking to it... nope, no voice recognition.

Finally... I figured out the top plate (circular on the very top) is a hidden switch! You press it... and it lights up (detail lights and bright main front lights)! And, for...
The End is Nigh.. But at Least it's the Ultimate Cut
Finally, Zac Synder's vision as it was meant to be. I can't believe they milked the DVD release for literally ever last penny they could. Nevertheless, I am incredibly pleased to own 'Watchmen: the Ultimate Cut'.

The fact that another season is coming out in Blu-ray is great. The problem is that Paramount/CBS is releasing these with super high prices. While plenty of people say you can just wait and they'll eventually come down in price (like season 1 did) and that is true, the problem is that if they keep releasing these with high prices and people keep waiting a year to buy, they may eventually stop releasing for perceived lack of demand. Plenty of people are already nervous that this is what's happened with Andy Griffith since both Lucy and Griffith S1 blu's were released at the same time and now there's only notice of Lucy S2. They may have wrongly assumed that just because people didn't want to buy Andy Griffith S1 for a hundred bucks that there's no demand, when really there is demand, just at a reasonable price-point like 30-35 dollars. Over a hundred dollars for one season of Lucy on Blu-ray, when you can buy the entire series for that price on DVD with LOADS of special features...

People, PLEASE stop driving the review rating down on this wonderful product based solely on price. As another reviewer mentioned, the cost involved in doing a frame by frame restoration of 60+ year old films has to be through the roof. CBS is sparing no expense in putting these superb "Ultimate Seasons" together. What do you all expect the price to be, 20 bucks? If it's out of your price range, either don't buy it, or wait about a year until the price drops substantially.

Now, as for the product itself, I received my "Ultimate Season 2" on it's release date, 8/4/15. I'm about 6 episodes in, and so far season 2 is just as gorgeous as season 1. Stunning picture quality. The bonus features are great as well. I'm a Lucy fanatic, but I've never seen "The I Love Lucy Movie" before. So glad that they included it in the bonus features. These show are just making their way onto HD stations. They're still marketable and profitable. They will continue to master in HD and have the added bonus of us all buying the series again on blu ray. It's a win-win situation. They WILL release all seasons. Therefore, punk, I have to ask you one question. Can you wait for the price to come down or do you need it now?

Jurassic Park: Great Video & (finally) Uncompressed Audio
In the light of so many negative customer reviews of this set, I decided, before writing this review to do a direct comparison between the DVD version of Jurassic Park vs. the Blu-ray. I made it a point to set my BD player audio compression to wide range and set the volume levels for each version to be approximately at the same level for the spoken dialog to give each version a fair comparison.

I chose four sections to compare:

1. The scene at Sam Neill's dig beginning with the brushing away of sand from a fossil.
2. The helicopter ride into Jurassic Park.
3. The first encounter with the brachiosaurus beginning when the jeeps come to a stop and Sam Neill and Laura Dern first see the creature.
4. The night storm scene with the T-Rex encounter.

All of the above begin at a chapter change of both disc versions, making them quick to locate.

The video: In no instance can the DVD version compare with the Blu-ray.

Yeah, I know the title of this review is corny, but you have to admit that this is a pretty nice boxed set. It contains all three films from the "Jurassic Park" film series. The first film stands alone as one of the most impressive and progressive films of its time. It featured the best special effects of its time and each film builds on these effects. Let's break each film down:

Perhaps the greatest dinosaur film ever made, "Jurassic Park" features brilliant special effects, wonderful acting and a great plotline filled with suspense and horror. With Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough heading up a small cast of characters including Samuel L. Jackson, this film is sure to be a winner in anyone's collection. Great deal
I've had the ultimate trilogy for some time now and the 3d version as well but I had to pick this set up anyways. Mostly as a gift for my grandchildren. This set is worth it mainly for the 3d with its remixed 7.1 audio over the remastered audio of the 2011 bluray version.

This is considered a remixed audio version because of some subtle differences from the earlier bluray 7.1 audio. I'm told you won't easily hear the difference unless, perhaps, if you're looking for it or unless you're really 'tuned' in to it. I, for one, do hear the subtle differences from my audio system. And it is amazing to my ears. To me, this is worth buying just for that.

As far as bluray picture quality. I believe the original 2011 bluray version of Jurassic Park I is a bit sharper. This remastered version seems to me to have removed most of film grain and so a lot of noise and doesn't look all that sharp to me anymore. I, for one, prefer a little film grain in my older movies...

Predator 3D (2013), Predator UHE (2010) and Predator (2008) blu-rays
(EDIT) 12/19/2013. Now that Predator 3D has been released, I thought a brief update to this review might be useful.

I was surprised at the quality of the 3D conversion, given that it used the automated JVC Fox workstation that was used for Jumper 3D and I, Robot 3D. The process costs about a third of what a typical catalog 3D conversion costs and can be done with about 3 people in 3 months. In contrast, Titanic took hundreds of people over a year to convert.

The slow rate of adoption of 3D has been attributed, in part, to the lack of available content. Fox Home Entertainment with JVC developed a business model using automated equipment that allowed the 3D conversion of catalog movies profitably.
I was doubtful that they would be successful in this after watching 3D clips of I, Robot shortly after it was released. I changed my mind after purchasing and watching Predator 3D.

The only caveat is that the extras are provided via a Disk two DVD. (Disk...

My 1-star review is not for the movie, Predator, which I love. I bought it twice on DVD: the first single-disc release with no extras, and then the excellent 2-disc special edition. I am not going to be buying on Blu-Ray, however, until the chowder-heads over at Fox start including all of the ALREADY PRODUCED extras on their Blu-Ray discs. Case in point: Predator.

Predator on Blu-Ray features a higher definition transfer (though on a single layer disc), but carries over none of the special features from the 2-disc DVD. How hard would this have been? Make it a dual layer Blu-Ray, and just throw them all on there in standard definition. That would have guaranteed and instant buy for me. But this habit of dumping the film bare-bones onto Blu-Ray is reminiscent of the early days of DVD, and I thought we were past that. Other studios are doing a fine job of including all the special features, so why is Fox being dumb? And why are they slapping a $40 MSRP on a bare-bones...

I recently tried to watch my Predator DVD, circa 1997 (or thereabouts) and it looked horrible. It was a fullscreen, widescreen disc with black bars on top, bottom, left, and right (which insluts my HD TV). The film was also not cleaned before transfer so it included wonderful hairs and scratches too. That's not to mention the films always horrible fuzzyness.

Don't believe all the whiners, Predator: The Ultimate Hunter Edition is the best this film has ever looked, and probably ever will look. Some people complained about too much Digital Noise Reduction. They said that it doesn't look like its supposed to anymore...don't listen to them. I almost didn't buy this disc because of all the complaining people were doing, but I'm glad I did.

Yes, there are maybe 3 shots where Carl Weathers' face looks a little too smooth in the beginning of the film, but that comprises about 10 seconds of the film. The rest of it looks great. The film still has film grain, it just isn't...

Predator 3D (2013), Predator UHE (2010) and Predator (2008) blu-rays
(EDIT) 12/19/2013. Now that Predator 3D has been released, I thought a brief update to this review might be useful.

I was surprised at the quality of the 3D conversion, given that it used the automated JVC Fox workstation that was used for Jumper 3D and I, Robot 3D. The process costs about a third of what a typical catalog 3D conversion costs and can be done with about 3 people in 3 months. In contrast, Titanic took hundreds of people over a year to convert.

The slow rate of adoption of 3D has been attributed, in part, to the lack of available content. Fox Home Entertainment with JVC developed a business model using automated equipment that allowed the 3D conversion of catalog movies profitably.
I was doubtful that they would be successful in this after watching 3D clips of I, Robot shortly after it was released. I changed my mind after purchasing and watching Predator 3D.

The only caveat is that the extras are provided via a Disk two DVD. (Disk...
Fox blows it on Blu-Ray again
My 1-star review is not for the movie, Predator, which I love. I bought it twice on DVD: the first single-disc release with no extras, and then the excellent 2-disc special edition. I am not going to be buying on Blu-Ray, however, until the chowder-heads over at Fox start including all of the ALREADY PRODUCED extras on their Blu-Ray discs. Case in point: Predator.

Predator on Blu-Ray features a higher definition transfer (though on a single layer disc), but carries over none of the special features from the 2-disc DVD. How hard would this have been? Make it a dual layer Blu-Ray, and just throw them all on there in standard definition. That would have guaranteed and instant buy for me. But this habit of dumping the film bare-bones onto Blu-Ray is reminiscent of the early days of DVD, and I thought we were past that. Other studios are doing a fine job of including all the special features, so why is Fox being dumb? And why are they slapping a $40 MSRP on a bare-bones...
Ultimate Hunter Edition is FANTASTIC!
I recently tried to watch my Predator DVD, circa 1997 (or thereabouts) and it looked horrible. It was a fullscreen, widescreen disc with black bars on top, bottom, left, and right (which insluts my HD TV). The film was also not cleaned before transfer so it included wonderful hairs and scratches too. That's not to mention the films always horrible fuzzyness.

Don't believe all the whiners, Predator: The Ultimate Hunter Edition is the best this film has ever looked, and probably ever will look. Some people complained about too much Digital Noise Reduction. They said that it doesn't look like its supposed to anymore...don't listen to them. I almost didn't buy this disc because of all the complaining people were doing, but I'm glad I did.

Since Lions Gate has been mum on the details/specs of this set, never even issuing a press release containing any info., I thought I'd take this opportunity to answer many of the unanswered questions for those who have yet to order:

1. The 3 movies are the exact same blu-rays that were released separately. Right down to the now dated ads and trailers that you cannot skip past. Same extra features (not many), same picture, same everything -- outside of the discs themselves which are all that generic grey "rental" version looking disc with no individual artwork. There is, as expected, NO director's cut of the original film included.

2. The 2 documentaries are on 1 disc, despite this being labeled as a 5 disc set when I (and many others) ordered it.

The Perfect [Horror] DVD Set!
September 26th was a date etched in my brain. I could not wait for the arrival of the "Scream Trilogy: Box Set" let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Besided being the most successful horror series EVER, (yes people, even better than all 27 Friday the 13ths) it's really smart. The dialogue, characters and plot twists are exceptional. Of course, being directed by the MASTER of horror and suspense, Wes Craven, made it even better. This set is absolutely perfect. Each of the Scream films, all in widescreen, with Dolby Digital surround sound, audio commentary and loads of extras. The Scream Ultimate Collection is truly that! This box set is assembled very nicely and uses the plastic (not cardboard) cases for the DVDs. I prefer the plastic cases for durability! With the smash hit Scream, novice screenwriter Kevin Williamson and veteran horror director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) revived the moldering corpse of the teen horror picture, both creatively and commercially, by playfully acknowledging the exhausted clichés and then turning them inside out. Scream is a postmodern slasher movie, a horror film that cleverly deconstructs horror films, then reassembles the dead tissue, and (like Frankenstein's monster) creates new life. When a serial killer starts hacking up their fellow teens, the media-savvy youngsters of Scream realize that the smartest way of sticking around for the sequel is to avoid the terminal behaviors that inevitably doom supporting players in the movies. They've seen all the movies, and the rules of the genre are like second nature to them. One of the scariest/funniest setups features a kid watching John Carpenter's seminal Halloween on video. Fully aware of its status as the sequel to the surprise hit thriller of 1996, this lively follow-up trades freshness for familiarity, playing on our affection for returning characters while obeying--and then subverting--the "rules" of sequels. Once again, movie references are cleverly employed to draw us into the story, which takes place two years after the events of Scream, at a small Ohio college, where the Scream survivors reunite when another series of mysterious killings begins. Capitalizing on the guesswork involving a host of potential suspects, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have crafted a thriller that's more of a Scream clone than a genuinely inventive new story. But the shocks are just as effective, and escalating tension leads to a tautly staged climax that's simultaneously logical and giddily over the top. Background information for trivia buffs: to preserve the secrecy of plot twists, copies of the screenplay were heavily guarded during production and restricted to only the most crucial personnel. When an early draft was circulated on the Internet, screenwriter Kevin Williamson did rewrites, and subsequent drafts were printed with red ink on brown paper, eliminating the threat of photocopying. Scream 3
When Randy the video geek rattles off the rules of surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's Scream, he speaks for a generation of filmgoers who are all too aware of slasher movie clichés. Playfully scripted by Kevin Williamson with a self-aware wink and more than a few nods to its grandfathers (from Psycho to Halloween to the Friday the 13th dynasty), Scream skewers teen horror conventions with loving reverence while re-creating them in a modern, movie-savvy context. And so goes the series, which continues the satirical spoofing by tackling (what else?) sequels while sustaining its own self-contained mythology. Catty reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns grisly murders into lurid bestsellers, a cult of killer wannabes continues to hunt spunky psycho-survivor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for their 15 minutes of fame, and a cheesy movie series (Stab) develops within the movie series.

Scream remains the high point of the series--a fresh take on a genre long since collapsed into routine, but Scream 2 spoofs itself with witty humor ("Why would anyone want to do that? Sequels suck!" opines college film student Randy), and delights with more elaborate set pieces and all-new rules for surviving a horror movie sequel. The endangered veterans of the original film reunite one last time for Scream 3, which plays out on the movie set of Stab 3. (It's a trilogy within a trilogy!) With Williamson gone, replacement screenwriter Ehran Kruger tries to mine the formula one more time. It's a little tired by now, and pale imitations (Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer) have further drained the zeitgeist, but the film bubbles with bright humor, and director Craven is stylistically at the top of his game. As most horror devotees already know, the Scream franchise was fraught with production troubles from its inception through its fourth and apparently final entry, and the two documentaries included on the fourth disc of the Scream collector's set (both of which are feature length, which explains the confusion over the set's "5 Film" label) represent the first attempt to bring together a cohesive portrait of the series' behind-the-scenes history. Both Still Scary: The Ultimate Scary Movie Retrospective, by ShockTilYouDrop.com editor Ryan Turek, and Scream: The Inside Story, which was produced for the Biography Channel by much of the same creative team behind the epic Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, cover the same ground, which is director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson's struggles with the MPAA, producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and a myriad of other outside forces throughout the series through interviews with many of the production principals, most notably stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Jamie Kennedy (Williamson and Courteney Cox are conspicuously absent from both projects). Still Scary offers the more comprehensive presentation, thanks largely to its inclusion of such less well-known players as Scream 3 scribe Ehren Kruger, who capably defends his much-maligned script, and offers welcome touches of visual and editorial style in its "quick cuts" segments, which present tidbits of info that, while not entirely germane to the documentary's main thrust, provide the sort of detail that dedicated fans of the series will love. The Inside Story delves deeply into pre-production issues, from Craven's reluctance to helm the series to the battle over Ghost Face's iconic mask and costume. In-depth discussions of the characters through dialogue readings by the original cast and screen tests, as well as split-screen comparisons between the original NC-17 edit and the R-rated theatrical cut, are equally invaluable. All Questions Answered! Full Details Revealed!
Since Lions Gate has been mum on the details/specs of this set, never even issuing a press release containing any info., I thought I'd take this opportunity to answer many of the unanswered questions for those who have yet to order:

1. The 3 movies are the exact same blu-rays that were released separately. Right down to the now dated ads and trailers that you cannot skip past. Same extra features (not many), same picture, same everything -- outside of the discs themselves which are all that generic grey "rental" version looking disc with no individual artwork. There is, as expected, NO director's cut of the original film included.

2. The 2 documentaries are on 1 disc, despite this being labeled as a 5 disc set when I (and many others) ordered it.

3. The 2 documentaries are in partial HD. "Scream: The Inside Story" goes between 1080i, 720p and 480p. The only parts in 480p are clips of the actual Scream movies. The rest, for unknown reasons (I suspect a...
The Perfect [Horror] DVD Set!
September 26th was a date etched in my brain. I could not wait for the arrival of the "Scream Trilogy: Box Set" let me tell you, it was worth the wait. Besided being the most successful horror series EVER, (yes people, even better than all 27 Friday the 13ths) it's really smart. The dialogue, characters and plot twists are exceptional. Of course, being directed by the MASTER of horror and suspense, Wes Craven, made it even better. This set is absolutely perfect. Each of the Scream films, all in widescreen, with Dolby Digital surround sound, audio commentary and loads of extras. The Scream extras include: 3 Behind The Scenes featurettes, trailers, TV Spots, Q&A with the cast and crew, special effect gallery, film facts etc. Scream 2's extras include: outtakes, deleted scenes, Production Featurette, music videos, trailer, TV Spots etc. Finally, Scream 3's DVD includes: Outtakes, Deleted Scenes, Alternate Ending, Trailers, TV Spots, music video, Behind the Scenes...
Excellent Box Set!
When I review a movie, especially a box set, I base my review on the bonus material and quality of the set in general. I think most people who buy movies from Amazon have usually seen the movies they are buying already.

The Scream Ultimate Collection is truly that! This box set is assembled very nicely and uses the plastic (not cardboard) cases for the DVDs. I prefer the plastic cases for durability! This set also includes a fourth disc packed with bonus material. Here's a break-down of what's on each disc besides the movie.

Jurassic Park: Great Video & (finally) Uncompressed Audio
In the light of so many negative customer reviews of this set, I decided, before writing this review to do a direct comparison between the DVD version of Jurassic Park vs. the Blu-ray. I made it a point to set my BD player audio compression to wide range and set the volume levels for each version to be approximately at the same level for the spoken dialog to give each version a fair comparison.

I chose four sections to compare:

1. The scene at Sam Neill's dig beginning with the brushing away of sand from a fossil.
2. The helicopter ride into Jurassic Park.
3. The first encounter with the brachiosaurus beginning when the jeeps come to a stop and Sam Neill and Laura Dern first see the creature.
4. The night storm scene with the T-Rex encounter.

All of the above begin at a chapter change of both disc versions, making them quick to locate.

The video: In no instance can the DVD version compare with the Blu-ray.

Yeah, I know the title of this review is corny, but you have to admit that this is a pretty nice boxed set. It contains all three films from the "Jurassic Park" film series. The first film stands alone as one of the most impressive and progressive films of its time. It featured the best special effects of its time and each film builds on these effects. Let's break each film down:

Perhaps the greatest dinosaur film ever made, "Jurassic Park" features brilliant special effects, wonderful acting and a great plotline filled with suspense and horror. With Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough heading up a small cast of characters including Samuel L. Jackson, this film is sure to be a winner in anyone's collection. Great deal
I've had the ultimate trilogy for some time now and the 3d version as well but I had to pick this set up anyways. Mostly as a gift for my grandchildren. This set is worth it mainly for the 3d with its remixed 7.1 audio over the remastered audio of the 2011 bluray version.

This is considered a remixed audio version because of some subtle differences from the earlier bluray 7.1 audio. I'm told you won't easily hear the difference unless, perhaps, if you're looking for it or unless you're really 'tuned' in to it. I, for one, do hear the subtle differences from my audio system. And it is amazing to my ears. To me, this is worth buying just for that.

As far as bluray picture quality. I believe the original 2011 bluray version of Jurassic Park I is a bit sharper. This remastered version seems to me to have removed most of film grain and so a lot of noise and doesn't look all that sharp to me anymore. I, for one, prefer a little film grain in my older movies...
